Newco Los Angeles: Custom Commercial Cabinetry with HPL & Solid Walnut Edgebanding

A full-scale commercial cabinetry installation in the heart of Los Angeles — featuring high pressure laminate cabinetry with solid walnut edgebanding, solid walnut floating shelves, and custom solid white oak stair treads, all built and installed by California Woodworking.

When Newco came to us for their Los Angeles build-out, the brief was clear: high-end commercial cabinetry that could hold its own in a bold, industrial-chic space. The result was one of the more visually striking projects we've delivered — a full break room and café-style kitchen that combines clean white HPL cabinetry with rich solid walnut accents and custom white oak stair treads.

HPL Cabinetry with Solid Walnut Edgebanding

The cabinetry throughout the space was fabricated using high pressure laminate (HPL) — a durable, low-maintenance material that's a go-to for commercial interiors. But the detail that really elevates the look is the solid walnut edgebanding applied to every exposed edge. Rather than the standard PVC or paper edgeband, we used real solid walnut, which gives each cabinet door and drawer a warm, premium edge that contrasts beautifully against the white HPL face.

This combination — white HPL body with solid walnut edge — gives the cabinetry a custom furniture feel at a commercial build-out scale. It works perfectly against the space's exposed brick walls, coffered tin ceiling, and industrial steel elements.

Solid Walnut Floating Shelves

Complementing the upper cabinetry are custom solid walnut floating shelves. These were fabricated from solid walnut stock and installed to integrate seamlessly with the cabinetry run — providing open display storage that keeps the space feeling airy while adding another layer of warm wood tone.

Floating shelves in a commercial setting need to be engineered for real use, not just aesthetics. Our shelves are designed and mounted with the hardware and structural support to handle the weight of actual daily use — not just decorative staging.

Custom Solid White Oak Stair Treads

One of the standout elements of the Newco project was the custom solid white oak stair treads. The staircase connecting the two levels of the space anchors the entire design — and our custom milled white oak treads gave it the warmth and character the project demanded.

White oak was the right call here: it's dense, durable, and ages beautifully in a commercial environment. The natural grain character reads as refined next to the raw brick and steel of the surrounding space without competing with it.
