Choosing the Right Materials for Commercial Cabinetry
High-pressure laminates, Corian, melamine, or wood veneers? Learn which materials work best for different commercial applications and how to make the right choice for your project.

When it comes to commercial cabinetry, material selection is one of the most critical decisions you'll make. The right material balances durability, aesthetics, maintenance requirements, and budget. After 35+ years fabricating commercial cabinetry across Southern California, we've seen what works—and what doesn't.
High-Pressure Laminate (HPL): The Workhorse
High-pressure laminate—brands like Formica, Wilsonart, and Nevamar—is the most popular choice for commercial cabinetry, and for good reason. HPL offers hundreds of colors, patterns, and woodgrain finishes at a price point that works for most budgets.
Best for: Office cabinetry, break rooms, storage solutions, and any application where durability and variety matter. HPL is scratch-resistant, easy to clean, and holds up well in high-traffic environments.
Considerations: Seams are visible at edges and corners. While modern edge banding has improved significantly, HPL isn't seamless like solid surfaces.
Corian & Solid Surfaces: Seamless & Sanitary
Corian and other acrylic solid surfaces are the gold standard for healthcare facilities, reception desks, and any application where seamless, non-porous surfaces are essential. Solid surfaces can be thermoformed into curves and joined invisibly—no visible seams.
Best for: Nurse stations, reception desks, healthcare countertops, and commercial restroom vanities. Corian is non-porous, making it ideal for sanitary environments.
Considerations: Higher cost than HPL. Solid surfaces can scratch more easily than HPL, but minor scratches can be buffed out—a unique advantage.
Melamine: Budget-Friendly & Functional
Melamine is a thermally fused laminate applied directly to particleboard or MDF. It's more affordable than HPL and works well for interior cabinetry, shelving, and storage where aesthetics are secondary to function.
Best for: Back-of-house storage, utility cabinetry, and projects with tight budgets. Melamine is durable and easy to clean.
Considerations: Limited color and finish options compared to HPL. Edges can chip if not properly finished.
Prefinished Wood Veneers: Warmth & Elegance
For projects where warmth and natural beauty matter, prefinished wood veneers deliver. We use factory-finished veneers to ensure consistent color and finish—no onsite staining or painting required.
Best for: Executive offices, boardrooms, reception areas, and any space where a high-end, natural aesthetic is desired.
Considerations: Higher cost and more maintenance than laminates. Wood veneers can fade or change color with UV exposure over time.
How to Choose: Ask These Questions
- What's the environment? Healthcare facilities need non-porous surfaces. High-traffic offices need scratch resistance.
- What's the aesthetic goal? Modern and clean? Go with HPL or solid surfaces. Warm and traditional? Consider wood veneers.
- What's the budget? Melamine and HPL are cost-effective. Solid surfaces and wood veneers are premium options.
- How much maintenance can you handle? HPL and melamine are low-maintenance. Wood veneers require more care.
