Apartment Complex Common Area Seating Niche: Architectural Millwork in Goleta
A look at how we designed and installed a custom built-in seating niche featuring light tone maple wood veneer, architectural millwork columns, and refined wall paneling for an apartment complex common area in Goleta, CA.

When the general contractor on this Goleta apartment complex needed a common area that felt elevated and welcoming, the answer was in the details. This built-in seating niche brings warmth and character to a shared space through thoughtful material selection and precise architectural millwork — the kind of work that turns a functional area into a destination residents actually want to use.
Light Tone Maple Wood Veneer
The entire niche is wrapped in light tone maple wood veneer, creating a cohesive, natural warmth throughout the space. Maple's fine, consistent grain pattern lends a clean, contemporary aesthetic without the heaviness of darker species. The light tone keeps the space feeling open and airy — an important quality in a shared common area where residents of all tastes need to feel at home.
The veneer was applied to the full back wall panel, the integrated bench base, and the surrounding column faces, creating a seamless, unified look from floor to ceiling.
Architectural Millwork Columns & Wall Paneling
Flanking the niche are custom-built architectural millwork columns with fluted detailing — a design element that adds depth and visual interest while framing the seating area as a defined space within the larger common area. The columns rise from a paneled base to the ceiling, giving the installation a substantial, built-in feel that looks like it has always been part of the building.
The back wall paneling features a clean, flat-panel profile that complements the columns without competing with them. A transom-style glass panel above the niche allows natural light to pass through, keeping the space bright while maintaining the defined enclosure of the seating area.
Integrated Bench & Built-In Shelf
The bench seat is built directly into the millwork structure, with a surface depth and height designed for comfortable seating. Power outlet access is integrated into the back panel, making the niche equally suited for casual conversation or remote work. The shelf above provides a display ledge without cluttering the clean lines of the installation.
